Unauthorised remote access incident

$

The laptop was sitting open and on, as my husband entered the room he saw that somebody was remotely accessing the computer!!!! They were moving the mouse and clicked on our Amazon icon. My husband took control of the mouse and the other 'person' was trying to snatch back control,  my husband tried ctl-alt-del and the other 'person' tried to stop him by trying to close the window, so my husband turned off the laptop with the button.
Who could have done this????

Our PC is plugged in to the internet and we dont have wifi in the house. The laptop is also permanently on flight mode.

I can only conclude that this was someone at Dell.
He says this was a couple of days ago.

Please can someone at Dell get back to me and look into this.

Low disk space on new HP Stream 11

I bought two of these laptops to help my children with their study. One was bought only 6 months ago, the other late in 2019 but both have run out of disk space already and can't install updates, for example. I have tried to create a new excel file this morning and was told there was insufficient disk space to open it. There's virtually no documents stored on the laptops as we use One Drive. Has anyone got a simple fix for this? Thanks

Hi,

Just to let you know this is a HP community, not Dell.

You say the PC " is plugged into the internet" so you could run some Antivirus software and see if there is any Malware on the computer.

It is highly unlikely that anyone at Dell would be able or would want to access your Computer.

Naturally, it could also be a software or even hardware problem where the cursor moves on its own.

Regards,

David

Hi:

You have two ways to try and reinstall W10.

Both options will require you to have access to another Windows PC running W7 64 bit or newer.

1. Make a bootable USB recovery drive using the HP cloud recovery tool that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your PC.

Here is an info link for how to use that utility...

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10, 7) | HP® Customer Support

If the cloud recovery tool doesn't work, then you can clean install W10 by making bootable installation media using the media creation tool from the link below.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your PC's support page.

Windows activation and system recovery

I am 6 months into my warranty with the hp laptop and there's a licensed window in it that activates when a new device connects to the internet (Saw on HP Website). Recently I have encountered some blue screens of death and upon investigation I got to know that a few system files are corrupt but my laptop is functioning normally but I want to act before my laptop suffers.

I want to know whether I should reinstall windows and format my hard drive ???

OR should I go for SYSTEM RECOVERY ?

And also will I have to activate my windows again after SYSTEM RECOVERY ??

Hi,

I usually prefer a clean install. You do not need a product key for a clean install or system recovery. The key is in the firmware of the notebook.

Here is a small guide.

Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (or different PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition. Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC , press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows. Choose Custom install and delete all partitions and then install in unallocated space.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.

I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.

Hope it helps,

David

Sorry, yes I mean HP not Dell. I do not know how to do this but will see if i can figure it out - you would think my anti virus software would stop something like this from happening. Would still like a reply from HP (not Dell) to check activity on our account.

Do I need a bootable pendrive for the SYSTEM RECOVERY as well ? And what you guided me through is regarding the clean install of windows ( The option I mentioned apart from the SYSTEM RECOVERY, is it?

Does SYSTEM RECOVERY also need a restore point ? since i never made any.

The last question is the easiest one to answer -- and MY answer is "not much"!  MS has been working on Win10 for years and years and, in my opinion, they are struggling to find anything really useful to add to it twice a year.  A lot of their new features have been oriented around Social Media, and since I do not use that, I have no use for those.  Recently, they have put a lot of work into integrating Android phones into Windows 10 -- but the catch is you have to run the MS UI on your phone, and I tried that, and did not like it at all.  They have also put a lot of work into Cortana and OneDrive -- two features I have totally disabled.

Here's an old link listing the new features for the May 2020 update:  https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2020/05/27/whats-new-in-the-windows-10-may-2020-update/

When I looked at that list, I saw NOTHING of use to me.

If you look around, you can find a similar list for the Fall 2020 update.

I wouldn't get the 20H2 version from Heidoc when you can get it for free from Microsoft -- but I suspect the result would be much the same -- and I don't have any solution for dealing with the install failure issues.

Wife poured water on Pavilion X360 laptop . I followed directions, opened up and got the water out.  Let it dry. After reassembly  find that the computer and all works fine.  However:

1. mousepad does not work. External Logitech mouse works fine.

2. sound is at maximum and little volume icon at top left of screen shows 100%. Adjusting sound via settings or via hidden icons does not work.

Thanks for any assistance.

OK.

You can recover the system to an older restore point which will take the system to the point the last restore point was created.

You can use Windows recovery which will perform a reinstallation (you can choose to keep personal files)

You can perform a cloud recovery (need a USB drive)

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hp-cloud-recovery-tool/9mtks9pr7r3n?rtc=1&activetab=pivot:overviewtab

You can use HP recovery manager if it is installed on the system.

Here is a great article which shows the various options

Hope it helps,

Anybody Have Recovery Media For This?

According to the HP specs on your model laptop, it came with a 2TB standard laptop SATA drive -- so I fail to understand why the HP diagnostics won't run on that, since they have no issues working on standard SATA drives.

All I can suggest is replacing the drive and trying the diagnostics (F2) again to try and test the new drive.

I was having trouble with my laptop so I hard reset it and when it was done resetting to its factory state, it said that i had to have a disk for windows. But I never got a disk or anything like that, it said that If I didn’t have the disk, to contact my system administrator or the manufacturer, so I’m contacting y’all. What do I do?

From your description, it sounds like the PC tries to boot from the USB stick, fails, and then resorts to booting from the hard drive.  Since you mentioned UEFI, this means you need Win10 media boot stick that was configured to use UEFI -- which from the actions, it looks it it was not.

So, download the Win10 install ISO file, then download and install RUFUS (a free utility for making boot media) which you can get from here: Rufus - The Official Website (Download, New Releases)

Then create the boot media to support UEFI mode -- and try again.

<Sigh>  Every time I read one of these Factory-Reset-Failed posts I cringe and continue to wonder why everyone seems to think a factory reset is a miracle cure when, in many cases, it only serves to make things worse!

You really should NOT have done that -- because HP no longer supplies recovery media for Win7 era PCs.  So, there is no way to get media from HP you can use to restore your PC.

In addition, both MS and the only sites also no longer supply media for Win7.

So, unless someone comes along with a site that DOES supply that media, you are stuck.
