Re: Unable to Boot from SSD m.2 NVME Samsung 970 Evo

Actually I do not have the experience and also guidelines on this. I did not unplug the HDD for the whole process as i want the HDD as secondary drive.
What i did is search thru internet and there are few methods to disable the secure boot and enable the legacy mode.
Anyway, it was all sorted out. One of my friend helped out.
What i did:
1) Disk management and found out the new Samsung Evo 970 is actually 'Offline' and thus i turned it to 'Online'
2) Change the sequence of boot device and try to boot with SSD

3) It worked and i restarted/shut down for few times to make sure it is good to go

4) Enable secure boot and disable legacy mode and restart/shut down for few times

5) i am pretty sure the SSD is being used for boot because the boot time is shorten ALOT

6) Unplug the HDD and  restart/shut down for few times to make sure everything is good by only using SSD

7) Connect back the HDD and formatted it

Hi

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Try these steps to test the Hard Drive -

1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F2 once.
4) Go to Component test.
5) From the list, run the Hard Drive (extensive) test.

If the test passes, try installing the operating system using the Media Creation Tool - Create Windows 10 installation media

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi,

Yes, it is possible that there is no recovery partition, as there are so many other recovery options such as Cloud recovery:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06162205

clean install using Microsoft media (for free)

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

and the various recovery options in Windows 10. The refresh is part of Windows 10 and not HP recovery.

Personally, for a boost in performance, I would replace the 2.5" HDD with a 2.5" SSD such as the Crucial MX500 or similar and reinstall the OS on it. It would give a great boost to everyday performance.

Hope it helps,

David

Hi:

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to help you, since HP will no longer supply the required SMC.bin file that is used to clear the BIOS password.

That is the only way it could be done.

HP issued this document recently...

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06368824

Also the forum rules were amended on 1 March 2019, which no longer allow us to help with providing unlock codes, etc., to clear BIOS passwords. Rule 4.d...

For the PC to take that long to boot up, it could be a hard drive failing.  There are diagnostics built into the startup menu, try running those first.  Then report back with the results.

Bios Administrator Password for HP ProBook 650

Hi Again,

I recived a clear answer that the forgotten BIOS password cannot be reset by HP unless the system board is replaced.

What about:

- I have read that if I enter 3 times the wrong password it will generate a code and the I can go to:

- https://bios-pw.org/ with the code generated for a new password.

I have seen this workaround in few places related to HP Probooks BIOS reset passwords even for other suppliers etc.

Is it something that you guys can recommend that is worthwhile to try?

Thanks in advance.

Thanos

Re: failed backup on windows

I assume it was Windows backup. Without an explanation for the error, I would try a different backup software.  Since the name was not mentioned.  Here are some choices

https://www.pcworld.com/article/3201971/best-windows-backup-software.html

However, a USB drive might not be the best choice since that laptop has a 500GB hard drive, and could easily have too much data on it for the USB drive.

Hi:

The HP business class notebooks do not generate any system disabled codes.

As I posted before, there isn't a thing we can do to help you, and we are not permitted to discuss this subject on the forum anymore.

I find it disturbing that PC World does not even mention the very best free backup/restore app out there -- Macrium Reflect -- and the only entry for it is well over a year old, since it shows version 6 and they have been releasing version 7.2 for some time now.

Macrium Reflect (MR) provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or entire drives.

What I recommend is the following:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR) from here: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB stick
3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD

My experience is that MR, when using the High Compression option, typically can compress the saved image file to about 50% of the USED space in the OS partition. This means if you have an 80GB OS partition, and 40GB is used, MR only needs about 20GB to store the image file.

I use this all the time and it typically takes less than 15 minutes to do the image backup and about the same time or less to do a restore.

Plus, MR has the option to Add a Recovery Boot Menu entry. This allows you then to boot into WinRE, and you can then use that to do a restore -- when you can't boot into Windows!

NOW, you have the means to restore a full working system from the external drive or USB stick in only a few minutes.
