Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

Let's try re-installing the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery

1) In the search box, type and open “Device Manager”.
2) Expand “Batteries”.
3) Right click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.
4) Click on “Uninstall”.
5) At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driver
6) Shutdown the computer.
7) Remove the battery for minute and then put it back in.
8) When the computer comes back up it should automatically find the driver.
9) Go to Device Manager.
10) Expand Batteries.
11) Right click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.
12) Click "Search automatically for updated driver software". Do the same thing with Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller.

Also, try updating the computer -

Step 1 Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Step 2 HP Support Assistant Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Creating Windows 7 USB recovery disk

Running Windows 7 Pro.  Tried to generate a Windows recovery/install disk from Recovery Disk Creator from the program menu.   It gave me the choice of creating a Windows Disk (unspecified version) or HP Drivers disk. I choose Windows disk and inserted a USB flash drive. Create failed with a message about system files. I lost the error message before I could write it down.   Tried to generate the USB drive again, but it won't because I am given only one chance to do this.

Contacted HP Chat Support.  According to Divya, the unit was delivered with Windows 8 which is why I can't generate a Windows Install Disk from the recovery sector.   I'm just trying to generate an ISO from the recovery sector and didn't specify the flavor of Windows.   Any suggestions for how to generate a recovery ISO?

, Welcome to HP Support Community!

To provide you with an accurate solution, I would like to know the following:

Have you made any software or hardware changes on your computer?

Let's try to run an extensive system test from F2 and check if the hardware components on your PC are functioning correctly.

1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second.

When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.

4. Click Extensive Test.

5. Click Run once, or Loop until error.

While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component are

shown on the screen.

6. If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) so you have it

available when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in

Test Logs on the main menu.

Refer this article to know more information about running system diagnostics on your PC. Click Here

Depending on the test results, If the test fails then this clearly indicates a possible hardware failure Please contact our HP support team with the failure ID for further assistance.

If the test passes, then I would suggest you could try to use HP Cloud Recovery Tool which allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive.

If this option does not work then you can follow this link: HP PCs - Obtaining PC Recovery USB Drives or Discs Or else you may contact our HP support team to help you order a set of recovery media for your PC.

HP support team can be reached on this link

Hope this helps!

Looking at it more closely, the laptop is labelled Windows 8 Pro so Divya is correct about what was shipped.  Still doesn't explain why I can't generate a USB install disk.

What I meant by blinking is that anytime I insert the AC adapter without the battery, it blinks a green and red light simultaneously. I tried putting putting it on, but it wont come up

Hi! one of the fans on my HP Spectre x360 is broken but I believe I have a warranty on this. My laptop keeps turning off due to overheating, and when it is working on multiple tabs you'll begin to hear the fan working excessively hard to maintain all of the tasks.

Thank you for your reply.  I realized this laptop had Windows 8 originally.  I always wondered how you activate windows with the product key being in BIOS.  Thank you so much. But I had already found a forum article on how to the purchase the recovery media from http://computersurgeons.com.  That was a life saver also.  I really wanted to give it back to her like it was when she bought it.  Thanks again.

Black screen

I have never had any problems with my laptop, it was running great. I stepped away and when I came back, the screen was black. It’s plugged in. I’ve tried several different troubleshooting tips without luck. The power light stays on for 15secs, off for 3 secs then repeats. The hard drive light is flashing one short white light, one long white light, then a very short amber light flashes and then it repeats. I can hear the fans every so often and I’ve plugged the laptop into a different monitor without change. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi:

All that error code translates to is 'Failed.'

You will have to replace the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.   The HDD R & R procedure can be found in chapter 5.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04763031

You may want to consider purchasing a better performing, normally more reliable solid state drive (SSD).

After you replace the hard drive you can use the HP cloud recovery client utility to reinstall W10.

Info for that utility is at the link below...

@KrazyToad

If you read carefully the initial posting, I'm not looking to overclock my machine but "underclock" it. Reaching 75°C in the winter with no particular software installed is a sign that the machine is unnecessarily stressed by the default factory settings. With a room temperature reaching 30°C and above in the summer, the CPU would reach 85°C, which is too close to the danger zone.

Using a conservative Windows config brought the temperature down to 30°C to 40°C in general, with peaks below 60°C, which is what I hoped the Support Community would help with....

Go into Disk Management and create a new Primary partition in the unallocated space. I would make it NTFS to allow you to save large (>2GB) files.

Once that is done and you restart, Windows will automatically assign it a drive letter and you can start using it.

Good Luck

When you say your PC will "not start" -- that does not make sense because if it did not start, it would not present the error message you claim.

If it will start but not boot into Windows, that is a different issue.

You need to be specific about the issue.

Re: new laptop lagging

A new PC out of the box still could be several months old ... and the likely culprit is Windows Update ...

With a Win10 PC, you're going to experience a variety of problems not typical of the older PCs.

First is sluggishness. You may experience a very slow PC at times because Windows Update (WU) is hogging your PC, searching for, downloading, and installing updates -- to bring your PC up to the most current version of Windows. This can also contribute significantly to high processor temperatures, as it is being heavily used.

Second is fan noise. That's directly related to fan speed, which is the result of processor heat, and WU is known to drive up the processor load -- sometimes to 100%. That can cause the fan to run loud and continuous for some time.

Third is disk usage. WU can easily force the disk usage to 100% and and keep it pinned there for some time. That's because it writes WU files to the drive, then it turns around and reads them, then it overwrites existing Windows System files. All of that takes a lot of disk usage to complete.

These processes are compounded by Win10 because new Win 10 patches coming out nearly every Tuesday. Since you can't stop Updates like you did with Win7, this means you're going to get updates, regardless of what you do.

To find out what version and build of Win10 your PC is running, do the following:
1) enter "cmd" (without the quotes) into the search area and select the Command Prompt option
2) enter "winver" into the command window (again, without the quotes)
3) The most current Win10 versions as of 7/9/19 are the following:
a) v1803: Bld 17134.915
b) v1809: Bld 17763.615
c) v1903: Bld 18632.239.

If yours is older than that, most likely WU is hogging your PC trying to update it.

Some folks have been told that resetting your PC will fix this. but, if you reset your PC, you only make matters WORSE! Why? Because you will reset Win10 back to the original version that came preloaded on the PC and that will restart Windows Update all over again.

To disable WU temporarily, do the following:
1) Enter "services" in the search area (again, without the quotes)
2) When the window opens, scroll down until you see Windows Update
3) If it say Running under status, that indicates that WU is running
4) To change that, double-click on that task, select Stop under the Service status, and then Apply
5) That should stop WU -- and you should see an immediate improvement in performance.

If not, then WU is not the problem.

WU will restart itself automatically later on, so you basically have no choice than to bear with it until it finishes.
