Re: Update Causing Freezing On Spectre X360 - 15 Inch

Incredibly sorry to hear you are having the same/similar issue, but I'm sorry to say that misery apparently does love company, because this has been an absolute nightmare to troubleshoot.

HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl112dx
Windows 10 Professional (x64) Build 16299.334 (1709)

i7-8550U, 16GB DDR4-2400, 512GB SK hynix NVMe disk

Intel UHD Graphics 620 (driver version: 22.20.16.4815 9/26/2017)
nVidia MX150 (driver version: 23.21.13.9101 2/23/2018)

Had the machine less than a month, tried all the various suggestions related to adjusting the power settings for WiFi, thought perhaps things had gotten a bit better, but obviously that has not resolved things.  Will try adjusting my Intel graphics drivers and report back.  It's to the point where i can't even use the machine, because the mouse will stutter and freeze for multiple seconds over and over and over.  I'm getting close to trading this thing in for a Lenovo or Dell XPS 15.  My apologies for venting my frustrations here.  It's a lovely little device, but if i can't perform basic functions while working remotely I might as well be using pencil and paper.

Thanks to all who have contributed insight to this (far too common) issue.

Hi,

In that case, check the following.

1.  The halt code ( 67610629 ) that you've posted is definetely correct.

2.  Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out for the moment ), start the notebook and try entering the unlock code 78778209 again.

3.  Try entering the code 78778209 via an external usb QWERTY keyboard.

Hi! , Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!

I understand the fan on your laptop is making a lot of noise.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your laptop?

Please provide the product number of your PC to assist you better.

As you mentioned when you power on your PC the fan is making a loud noise.

I have checked the records and I don't see any service advisory related to the issue you have mentioned.

Try few steps recommended below and check if it helps.

To properly ventilate the computer, allow at least 7.6 cm (3 in) of clearance on the left side
of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation. The fan is controlled by a temperature
sensor and is designed to turn on automatically when high-temperature conditions exist. These conditions
are affected by high external temperatures, system power consumption, power management/battery
conservation configurations, battery fast charging, and software requirements. Exhaust air is displaced
through the ventilation grill located on the left side of the computer.

Try the steps recommended below.

  1. Download the Windows 10 "Show or Hide Updates" Troubleshooter Package (https://hp.care/2I4SdeH).
  2. Change the Windows Update Services setting from Automatic (Delayed Start) to Manual.
    • In the Control Panel, select Administrative Tools and open Services.
    • Scroll down to Windows Update and double-click it to bring up its properties.
    • Click Stop to stop the service from running.
    • Change the Startup Type to Manual and click OK.
  3. Install version 9 or 10 of the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver.  If you receive a dialog warning about replacing a newer version of the software, accept it.
    • NOTE: You do NOT need to uninstall version 11 before installing version 9 or 10.  The presence of some version of the driver is required in order to "upgrade" (or in this case downgrade) it.
  4. Run the Windows 10 "Show or Hide Updates" Troubleshooter Package and hide updates to the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver.  (Doing so will block your system from automatically reinstalling or showing updates for version 11 of the driver.)
  5. Change the Windows Update Services setting from Manual back to Automatic (Delayed Start).
  6. Restart your computer.

Also, try updating the chipset drivers and BIOS on your PC and check if it helps.

You can update the drivers on your PC using HP support assistant.

Refer this article to know more information about using HP support assistant.

Try running a system diagnostics on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are functioning correctly.

My temporary resolution was to simply delete the Intel graphics drivers from within Windows Device Manager (be certain to check the box to also delete these drivers) and then rebooted and simply applied the driver directly from Windows Update.  Unfortunately, it seems to have given me the identical driver version I was using previously (22.20.16.4815 9/26/2017) but have been running for 10+ minutes now without a single stutter.

Hardly a proper resolution, but whom ever suggested problems with the graphics driver seems to be on to something.  Will continue attempting to test thoroughly, or if anyone has suggestions for specific driver versions (with links) that'd be most helpful.  Trying to pull drivers from HP's website is a nightmare, as they have ten drivers listed for this GPU.  I'd rather not guess and check all of them.  Thanks!

Hi,

Your notebook came from HP with W7 64 bit.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02800848

You can also download W7 from this site...

I have not tested the file, but it is the same size as the official Microsoft ISO file.

http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/windows-7-home-premium-free-download-iso-32-bit-64-...

You will then need to either burn the file to a DVD using your DVD burner's burn ISO option, or use the utility I zipped up and attached below to transfer the file to a DVD or 4 GB USB flash drive.

Hi Riddell_Decipher,

First thank you for your efforts to help us with this constant daily shut down/restart problem even though it may be no fault of HP.

As possible solutions please add:  Disable FAST STARTUP. This was one of two suggestions by IKE8120 on April 3/18.  Here are the two fixes IKE posted:

Did you try to turn off the fast startup?https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-windows-10-fast-startup

As I posted be before may have to login as adminstrator https://routerunlock.com/how-to-enable-hidden-administrator-account-of-windows-10/

THIS HAS CORRECTED MY SPONTANEOUS SHUTTING DOWN/REBOOTING after over 5 months of frustration.

All the best

Hello,

Welcome to the HP Support forum.

If I were you, I'd attempt to restore HP Wireless Button Driver if the wireless button (hardware) is not working.

All others might be useful under certain conditions and curcumstances, but you may also skip them.

Windows 10 itself handles drivers and other important updates well - in Win 10, it can automatically install or update most of the things >> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139

Hope this works for you. Let me know if any further questions.

Hi

Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum.

When you see the screen asking for this password and if you enter some password (wrong password) 3 times, press ENTER eventually, do you receive a new window stating system disabled and a code similar to this one  ?

If you do, please, take note of the system disabled/halted code (write it down).

Pavilion dm4t-2100 Entertainment PC lost HD partition and recovery DVDs not installing OS

$

It failed while making a USB recovery media (with OS upgrade - which I regret) and  for some reason I couldn't boot to the OS ever since.  So, I used the recovery DVDs to install the OS (W7 Pro) again (with HD format), but failed.

Given no other way, I borrowed a generic Windows 7 Ultimate installer DVD and was able to install it.  Howver, what I got is a 32-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate (but it's a 64-bit PC).

The real problem is I couldn't connect to the internet since the ethernet driver is not working, nor updated (using drivers downloaded from another computer). And, I couldn't install the drivers for wireless, either.  It's probably because those drivers are for 64-bit OS.

I tried a few things and ended up with deleting all the partitions that were there intially.  So, I obviously made the situation worse.

In any case, I'm stuck and have no way to use it. All I need is any version of Windows that works and updates.  (It's not my main PC, but I plan to use it for multimedia connection.)

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi

Welcome to the HP Support forum.

Could you elaborate approximately when did you buy this PC ?

This message appears because when you press the shutdown or restart buttons, Windows sends signals to app open apps to close. Some of them it can close the standart way in a second withot notice. Some takes more time. Some refuse to stop.

You get this message because one of the open apps is from those which refuse to stop properly.

In addition to the information requested above, could you provide me with a log file so that I can see what software is starting along with your computer ?

Download Autoruns (from Microsoft) from this URL => http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe

Information about the product => http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

- Save the file on your Desktop

- Run Microsoft Autoruns  with Administrator rights (right click -> Run as Administrator).

Agree with the standard license agreement from Microsoft.

- Once Autoruns is started, it will need some seconds (could be a minute) to gather the snapshot, wait for it.

Once it is ready, you will see the word Ready in the lower left side.

  • Click on Options

Make sure that only the following are selected:

  • Hide Empty Locations
  • Hide Windows Entries

- Click on  Rescan button  or  click on File -> Refresh to rescan the system.

It will need some seconds (could be a minute) to gather the snapshot, wait for it.

Once it is ready, you will see the word Ready in the lower left side.

- Finally, click on File -> Save

Save the snapshot on the desktop in .TXT file

Open the newly created TXT log file.

Mark and Select all of the text (e.g. CTR+A), copy it and

visit http://pastebin.com/  to paste it there

Create new paste and give me the URL to see the log file.

Looking forward to your reply.

Hello

Welcome to the HP Support forum.

I checked online for original HP recovery media for your PC model but failed to find one. I am afraid this model is an old one and it's hard to find recovery media.

Just any version of Windows won't work that easily.

In order to activate your Windows, and in order to have no issues with drivers,  you need the exact same version as your PC has been designed for - like x64, OEM, Home/Pro, etc...

Do you have the Windows COA sticker attached to your PC ? Is it in readable condition ?

Can you confirm your Windows 7 edition from the COA sticker ? Home / Pro ?

Windows 10 is also some sort of an option. Microsoft offers free 90 day trial versions of Windows 10 Enterprise and Enterprise LTSB editions which you can test on your PC for about 3 months. If Windows 10 works, you will need to buy a Windows 10 Home or Pro version and reinstall it eventually. No guarantee Windows 10 will work on this, but if you want, I will provide instructions and you can try.

Looking forward to your reply.
