Re: Recovery download for HP Pavilion dv6-6b48nr Entertainment Notebook PC?

Hi:

This site has a file you can download, but all I can say is that it is the same size as the Microsoft file.

http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/windows-7-home-premium-free-download-iso-32-bit-64-bit/

Otherwise your only other option would be to purchase recovery media from this non-HP vendor, since HP no longer sells recovery media for that model series.

then I reinstalled the BIOS update with USB stick.

after updating BIOS again I ran HP diagnostic tool but got same result Smiley Sad

So I posted this back in February:

This past weekend, as I shut down my computer, it asked to Update and Shut Down which I did.  On February 14, I turned on the computer and it was working through finshing installing the updates and gave me the message that it could restart several times.  This started at 6:15 PM EST.  At 11 PM, I came upstairs and all that was on the screen was the HP logo and the rotating circle of dots at the bottom.

What was on the screen in that pic happened to me last week as well and I had to keep on doing a force shut down by pressing the button.  It would never move past this screen.  I then was given the opportunity to either restart or go through advanced options.  I went through advanced options and basically restored to a previous version.

So when I saw this happening again last night I got concerned.  I left the computer on overnight to see if that did anything and at 5 AM this morning, it was still that same screen with the HP logo and the rotating circle of dots!  So I did a force shut down again and strated it back up.  As it was starting up I either hit F1 or F8 and got the message (see the pic) "Attempting to recover installation.." and then it said "Restoring you previous version of Windows..."

As this kept on happening, I enlisted the help of Microsoft because I did not want to run the Windoes Update and I could not find a way to turn off or permanently delete Windows Update Assistant and it was super annoying.  Microsoft told me that my computer did not have the right driver.  Also whatever I did with Microsoft to stop it from automatically updating through the assistant did not work because it keeps on happening.  I do not want to go through the same thing with having to revert to a previous version of windows.

Hey, thanks for helping me out man.  I applied your suggestion in my laptop and I was able to recover all the files in it and save them in another HD' laptop.

Cant update win 10 so I want to go back to 8.1

When I upgraded to win10 I didn't know it would disable the recovery partition.

I didn't know I  still needed the USB drive with the 8.1 recovery software, since I thought I would be staying with win10.

So what choices do I have now to get back to 8.1, since this computer can not be updated in win 10 anymore.?

Perform extensive hard drive and memory tests from UEFI/BIOS system diagnostics by tapping f2 key as soon as you power on notebook.

Let it complete. Report back with results.

Your only recourse now is to order something known as HP Recovery Media:

HP Recovery Media is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks. You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded.

You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Once there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click "Update". If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click the "+" symbol to expand that entry and click on Order Media for details.

Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:

If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1

If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

NOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!

If you have trouble finding a phone number, then try: 1 (800) 474-6836

If HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, a couple of other sites you can check are: http://www.computersurgeons.com/ and http://www.restoredisks.com/

When you get the media, if it is a USB stick, insert it into your PC, pressing F9 to get a Boot menu, then select the External USB Hard Drive to boot from it.

Is this an obvious option once I hit F2?

I don’t understand the purpose of that link as all it talks about is recovery. You said I need to do an extensive hard drive and memory test fro
UEFI/BIOS

I've edited it, go through it.

You just have to perform extensive hardware tests. I'm not sure what is the confusion regarding my 2nd post in this thread?

Thanks for editing the link.  Are you suggesting I do each test listed there?  Depending on that answer allows me to know what I can get done tonight or need to do at a later time

As an aside, my computer just updated for 1703 but it has failed to update to 1709 at least 22 times since December 13, 2017.  I believe that when I worked with Microsoft, we did some things so it would not try to update to 1709 given the errors I previously mentioned and Microsoft saying I don't have the right driver.

Please carry out my suggestion if you think it is okay. It'll take few hours.

So is it trying to update to 1709 now also?

Hi,

You can also try to reinstall W8.1 by trying some of the no cost approaches out there in cyberspace, such as this...

Reinstall W8.1 by making your own plain W8.1 recovery media at the link below.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8

The utility will allow you to make a bootable USB flash drive, or save an ISO file which you can later burn to a DVD using your DVD burning program's burn ISO file option.

After W8.1 installs, go to your notebook's support page to install the drivers and available software you need.

You may have to enter the W8.1 product key, if you use a USB flash drive option to install W8.1, see the link below for how to get past that issue...

https://www.pcsteps.com/627-install-windows-8-1-without-product-key/

Then you will need to know the product key in the BIOS.

I have zipped up and attached a free utility that will show you the windows product key in the BIOS.

You will need to be in windows to use the utility.

You can also try this generic W8.1 product key when you are asked to enter one at the beginning of the installation script, and if the key works you can skip the intermediate step above.

Windows 8.1 (Not Pro): 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT

Then after W8.1 is installed, change the product key to the one in your notebook's BIOS to activate Windows.

Thank you, hopefully they can explain to me how to install the battery because I'm not sure how to do that
