Really liking your posts.  clear.  Sometimes I have to look up a half dozen terms to figure out what folks are advising.  The more intuitive the software gets, the more in the dark I am.  Oh, how I long for the days of batch files and no windows.  Now, that was productivity.  And control. Ok... back to my rocking chair and warm milk and other fond memories of my youth.

The downloaded ISO file which Rufus makes into a bootable memory stick will do it for you when it starts up.

So will the UBUNTU installer (should choose to switch to UB). Your existing system will be wiped away.  Be sure that you don't have any files on there (drive C:\) that you want to keep. In future install your Apps on the Extension memory card which can be up to 64Gb and appears as Drive D:\

Before you take this instruction as gospel try and get some confirmation from CherylG or another HP heavyweight.

Some people have said that the small Laptops and Notebooks don't have enough space to accomodate the ISO image file that you need to download. I think you can use another USB men stick or the extension card for the ISO file store but others say do it on another machine.

It's your choice

Windows 10 1709 not supported by HP on ENVY dv7t-7398

After 12hrs on Tech suppport with MS Windows tech support, found that the 1709 build of the windows 10 update will not install on my computer because HP has not developed the drivers and BIOS updates to support the update.

I custom ordered this laptop from their website just 4 years ago and paid top dollar for a loaded pc with all the bells and whistles. Pretty disappointed that this laptop is not listed on their website as compatible with the 1709 release.  MS rep optimistically thought perhaps HP will be getting bios and drivers ready for the next major 1803 upgrade.

Anyone have any solutions for now?

Thanks for your kind words.  I'm glad that this forum was able to send me in the right direction to solve this problem.  I found that HP puts a lot of proprietary "bulk" on this machines too and by not having all of that, it has freed up space I need.   The only thing I had to go get was the card reader to read my little card and that was a breeze.  I had expected this to take a whole day to accomplish, based on what I had been reading on this forum, but was very happy to spend less than an hour.  (Raising my glass to you folks here).

I have a hp envy dv7t-7398a. Have been unable to install 1709 build of windows update after 12hrs of time with Windows tech support.  They have determined that the update is not compatible with my laptop after reviewing list of tested laptops on HP's site.

Apparently HP has not developed updated BIOS and or drivers compatible with the new release.

The troubleshooter is unable to start the BITS program (background information transfer system) eventhough the HP trouble shooter indicates it is working fine.

Will HP have the necessary software updates soon to update to this version of Windows?

The Windows install itself does not take that long.

It is the updates following the installation that take a long time.

Since you are installing the newest version of Windows 10 there are no additional updates.

In addition, because the Stream is a newer laptop, most of the drivers it needs is already in Windows 10.

On the other hand, it takes several hours for a clean Windows 7 installation.

I just went through this recently.

HP really needs to test the BIOS/firmware before putting out PCs with new architecture - particularly expensive machines like this one! It's only, like, the newest HP machine on the market right now. However, just from searching this forum it seems the Envy series, in general, is plagued with BIOS problems of a similar nature to as described here.

http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/envy-x2/overview.html

How did HP even get Windows S onto this machine in the first place!? I guess the hard drives must be imaged first before they're fitted inside the machines, as the BIOS/firmware is incapable of booting up anything as far as I can tell...

These are just some of the Windows 10 on ARM ISOs I tried to boot via the BIOS/firmware - all designed with modern UEFI systems in mind:

16299.15.170928-1534.RS3_RELEASE_CLIENTPRO_OEMRET_ARM64FRE_EN-GB.ISO

17107.1000.180220-1350.RS4_RELEASE_CLIENTPRO_OEMRET_ARM64FRE_EN-GB.ISO

17627.1000.180315-1512.RS_PRERELEASE_CLIENTPRO_OEMRET_ARM64FRE_EN-GB.ISO

17025.1000.171020-1626_ARM64FRE.ISO

17133.1.180323-1312.RS4_RELEASE_CLIENTCORE_OEMRET_ARM64FRE_EN-GB.ISO

Here are all the Linux distibutions I tried:

CentOS-7-aarch64-Everything.iso

debian-9.4.0-arm64-xfce-CD-1.iso

Fedora-Everything-netinst-aarch64-27-1.6.iso

Fedora-Server-dvd-aarch64-27-1.6.iso

openSUSE-Tumbleweed-DVD-aarch64-Snapshot20180322-Media.iso

ubuntu-16.04.4-server-arm64.iso

Yet all crash during startup immediately after the UEFI boot stage - either as USB or DVD/CD-ROM - requires a hard reboot. As FAT-32 USB they are listed in the F9 boot menu as expected; CD/DVD mode asks to press any key to boot from CD or DVD... but all the Linux distros subsequently crash with a black screen (or Windows spins and then either freeze crashes or arrives at the "Watchdog Violation" BSOD). None of these operating systems will arrive at even the first menu screen, so we never get to configure partitions, etc. Also, with NTFS no boot devices even get listed/detected on the main F9 boot screen except as EFI files within the "Boot from EFI file" sub-menus - and it skips always to loading windows as if there's no USB connected. In a similar topic regarding this Envy series somebody even suggested we've got more chance of booting as exFAT/FAT16!!!

Note: the tools I used here were Rufus as well as the official Windows ISO to USB/CD/DVD to make the DVD-Rs (and hybrid ones boot up on other systems just fine). There aren't many options in the BIOS, and I've tried with/without secure boot, exhausting pretty much everything I can in terms of troubleshooting this. Fast startup is disabled in Windows as is Hibernate, etc, etc...

HP ENVY x2 Detachable 12-e0xx

System Board ID 84C7

Snapdragon(TM) 835

Since there are no firmware/bios driver updates available on the HP website, I guess I have no choice but to take this back to the shop on Saturday.

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

This link shows the consumer laptops that HP has TESTED for Win10 v1709:  https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05195282?jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0003

From what I can tell, yours is not in the list.  That does not mean it is necessarily incompatible with Win10 v1709, it just means that HP does not claim that it IS.

I have an old HP DV6 laptop that was not tested by HP for Win10, and it has been running Win10 just fine since I Upgraded it over two years ago -- including Win10 v1709.

Your only real way to know would be to force an Upgrade to Win10 v1709 -- which you can do from Win10 install media that you can create from this link:  Windows 10 download

When you then have the USB stick you created, insert it into your PC, find the folder containing the files, and then right-click the setup.exe file and select Run as Administrator. Do NOT boot from it, as that will erase and reinstall Win10.

But BEFORE you try that, I strongly suggest you follow the steps below to make an image backup of your PC to an external hard drive or large USB stick -- as this will allow you to then restore your current install, if the Upgrade goes badly.

I personally prefer to use third-party Backup solutions as they tend to be both more flexible and more reliable than any built-in solutions.

Macrium Reflect (MR) provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or entire drives: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

What I recommend is the following:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)
2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB stick
3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD

My experience is that MR, when using the High Compression option, typically can compress the saved image file to about 50% of the USED space in the OS partition.  This means if you have an 80GB OS partition, and 40GB is used, MR only needs about 20GB to store the image file.

I use this all the time and it typically takes less than 15 minutes to do the image backup and about the same time or less to do a restore.

NOW, you have the means to restore a full working system from the external drive or USB stick in only a few minutes.

Re: problem with factory reset

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

You said you "changed it to Win7" but basically, what you must have done, is install Win7 in place of the preinstalled Win8.

And, that could be a serious problem if that affected the HP Recovery partition in any way.

The typical way to invoke a Factory Reset is to press F11 and run the Recovery Manager.

If that does not work, then press the Esc key repeatedly while rebooting, and when you get a text menu, select the Reset option.

If that does not work, then your only recourse would be to order something known as HP Recovery Media:

HP Recovery Media is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks. You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded.

You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Once there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click "Update". If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click the "+" symbol to expand that entry and click on Order Media for details.

Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:

If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1

If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

NOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!

If you have trouble finding a phone number, then try: 1 (800) 474-6836
---------------------------------------
However, HP Customer Support is generally not available on the weekends, so you might have to wait until Monday to contact them.
---------------------------------------

If HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, a couple of other sites you can check are: http://www.computersurgeons.com/ and http://www.restoredisks.com/

When you get the media, if it is a USB stick, insert it into your PC, pressing F9 to get a Boot menu, then select the External USB Hard Drive to boot from it.
