My laptop resets the date and time to Jan 1 2008 12:00am when the battery dies on it, but it won't open the Adjust Date/Time window and won't sync to Internet time despite being connected and previously set to do so. I'm aware of how to manually change the date and time via Command Prompt, but for some reason I'm now being told that the user lack required privileges to make that change, despite being on the admin account. I've tried in safe mode as well to no avail. Ideas?

Are you sure the CMOS battery isn't failing? That is what keeps the time and date up to date.

Hi, thanks for the advice.  The Realtek driver files fixed the ethernet problem and the intel files set up correctly this time, although I did have to click setup to get it to work (it did not work initially when I just searched for the update).  As for the TPM 2.0 device, Microsoft writes

"WARNING   This hotfix has not undergone full testing. Therefore, it is intended only for systems or computers that are experiencing the exact problem that is described in the one or more Microsoft Knowledge Base articles that are listed in "KB Article Numbers" field in the table at the end of this e-mail message. If you are not sure whether any special compatibility or installation issues are associated with this hotfix, we encourage you to wait for the next service pack release."

So I might wait to install this.  Do you think I will have a security problem if I do not install this?  Thanks for all you do, you guys were a great help.

Hard drive became corrupted, recovered with Chkdsk, files present but will not recognize op system

Friends computer so of course no recovery media.

Initial error was no operating system found.

Removed hard drive and attached to another computer, ran CHKDSK /f which found and repaired a lot of issues (I figured hard drive was toast)

Found that files were actually present, note there are 3 partitions: OS, Build, and Recovery

OS looks normal, Build is empty, Reovery contains normal looking recovery structure.

Replaced in original laptop but it will not recognize disk contains operating system.

Cannot boot in any recovery manager.

Note that hardware tests are available and surprisingly the hard drive extended test passed.

My assumption is the problem is associated with the MBR but does anyone have experience in rebuilding the file in a way that may simply point to the recovery portion of the hard drive.  I guess it could point to the OS portion but I would really rather do a full recovery at this point.  Right now the hard drive is back out of the laptop and accessable to the computer I am writing this post on.

Any assistance is welcomed!  Thanks!

You're very welcome, Ray.

That hotfix is the only thing that will install that device.

I have given it to many forum members, and no one has had any issues with it.

What the TPM device does is to allow for file encryption in the versions of Windows that support bitlocker.

If you did not install W7 Ultimate, any other version of W7 does not have bitlocker capability, so you can't run file encryption on your notebook without it.

So, not installing that hotfix does not impact the acutal 'security' of your notebook.

But that is up to you.

Here are two such threads where I gave the hotfix to two other forum members...

There are a few others too somewhere.

Pavilion dv7 notebook crashes at Windows boot

This notebook worked fine until the last round of updates from HP Update Assistant. Now it crashes at boot into Windows with a blue screen referring to iaStor.sys. Same thing with safe mode and the onboard startup repair. When I perform the hardware tests at boot time, both drives (1TB HD & 32GB SSD) report no errors. I don't really know what to check next, or how to replace the corrupted file(s) if that is the problem and not just a symptom of something more.

Hello,

Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum.

This blue screen is called Blue Screen of death.

BSOD is kind of Windows self-protection feature. If you received a blue screen error, or stop code, the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from data loss.

Reason could be hardware or software issue but because ot the iaStor.sys - this is software/driver issue. The driver(s) have conflict.

I guess that some update messed up something.

In order to fix it, perform System Restore to get back to the point before the program/update was not installed/prior to change.

You can revert back to a state one day before the issue started. More information about System Restore and how to use it can be found here:

Let me know if this works.

Team HP, I keep coming to these post since I bought a WS Zbook 14 (June 2015). I would love to upgrade to Win 10. But, after reading these horror stories, I do not feel comfortable removing HP Client Security. HP need to work with Msoft to create a downloaded upgrade, that is plug-&-Play for us customers. Pls, posted this, once is done.

After reviewing files from a brand new Win10 laptop and comparing dates on Windows/INF, Windows/System32/Drivers, and Windows/System32 I noticed there were different driver files and some newer dates on the USB and HID files, so I suspected that I may need to do something like that...

Windows has a built-in option to reset the system... open the [File Explorer] folder

Click [This PC] - new menu items appear at the top of the file explorer window

Click [Settings] - [Update & Security] - [Recovery] - [Reset This PC]

I had one of my company's technicians [NextwaveAutomation.com] take another upgraded Win 10 system home that was having issues to do this. I will know tomorrow if it provides a complete update that makes an incompatible CNC controller work like it does with the new system.

OK an update.  So the driver reverting back to the original v9 driver seemed to stop the errors but not the slowdown.

We also found in device manager that the 0x8086:0xA116 device was a PCI Express port and it was connected to the AMD discrete video card.  After a few days, we've seen the WHEA error log this one occasionally and after updating the AMD Drivers last night to a newer release, we're almost there.

We encountered a slow down today and noticed that the video card had stopped responding / crashed, so this could explain it.

Basically this AIO is a lemon and will be working with HP today to have the systemboard replaced as this is just getting out of control now!

Jase.
