Advise on installing Win8.1 using an external DVD drive

$

I have an HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC .

My system crashed and I bought the Recovery Disks from HP for Windows OS 8.1 (64-bit)

When I tried installing the recovery disks, they wouldn't load all the way through.   I thought it was the Hard Drive, so I replaced it.  When I tried installing the same disks to the new hard drive, it failed again.    So, I thought it was the disks.   I then downloaded Win8.1 (64-bit) from Microsoft.   When I tried installing the new recovery disks, I got an error code of 0x80070017 (the file may be corrupt or missing).   Now I'm thinking it might be the DVD drive.

I did try downloading the OS on a flash drive, but I couldn't get the (f12 key) computer to recognize the flash drive so I could boot from it.

What I'm wondering is if I should get an external DVD drive so I can install the recovery disks from that.    But, since this would boot from USB....   would it be recognized just like the flash drive?

Thanks in advance!

Press ctrl+alt+del to restart". Already ran the f10 test on hard drive and memory. I do not have the reboot disc for it.

Hp Probook 450 G4 randomly freezing after SSD and Fresh OS installation

Hello All,

I have had my HP Probook for two years and now, and have been using it without any issue so far.

I have decided to upgrade it with a brand new Kingston SSD and i have installed a fresh windows 10 Pro.

Since i have made the upgrade 3 days ago i have been experiencing random freezes for 20 - 30 sec each, where windows just seems to be loading something, and whatever you try to click wont open. When freezing is done the os will pickup and reopen whatever application you opened or clicked on. these freezes are random and do not have any particular pattern.

I have tried some basic troubleshoting steps and did the below:

  1. made sure windows is up to date and downloaded all updates.
  2. i have performed sfc /scannow but it ailed to detect any issue .
  3. updated all my drivers using HP Support assistant.
  4. i thought that intel rapid storage might be causing such an issue, i tried uninstalling it but this failed to fix the problem.
  5. i have tried using the stock IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers driver, this also failed to fix my issue.
  6. i have tried to tweek my power plan to high performance in case it was putting the ssd in a low power state but that also failed to fix my issue.

At this point in time i am not sure what other troubleshooting steps i can try. Any help or suggestion will be highly apreceated.

Thank you in advance

Best Regards

The ebay ones tend to be infected with viruses and rootkits so congratulations.

Can I dual boot another Windows 10 version WITHOUT Optane acceleration?

Hi all,

I need to install Windows 10 Enterprise in a separate partition on a 1TB+16GB Intel Optane Windows 10 Home system. I couldn't find a clear answer to this anywhere, though I have seen some threads discussing this topic and suggesting some workarounds for dual booting Ubuntu but not another Windows.

Intel website info is grey, and all it says is that multi booting is not supported or recommended and results can’t be guaranteed, but whether dual booting will work at all, even without accelerating the second Windows remains a mystery!

Frequently Asked Questions about Installation and Configuration for Intel® Optane™ Memory

My plan is to continue using Windows 10 Home as my primary OS with Optane enabled. Enterprise will just be used occasionaly for testing purpose with Hyper-v, so I'm not so particular about it beeing accelerated and won't install RST (hopefully I won't need to) or enable Optane.

Will this work and can I use dual boot in this case, or worse, is it going to damage my current installation? I saw that some users reported their systems becoming unbootable. I don't want to mess up my new laptop and end up doing a factory reset after having spent so much time updating it and installing various software!

Appreciate your replies.

Hi

The manual is here.... http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06011408

If the Power Button does not respond then you would want to pay for an expensive repair.

If it was mine and the POWER button failed to respond I would unplug and hope the Battery discharges enough to open the case and remove the battery and try again. Becuase with no battery and only the charger it should be capable of being turned off.

So what you will have is an expensive repair bill and/or an expensive paperweight.

Hi

First:- Turn off the computer, press and hold the PWR button for 4 seconds.

Then - Leave only keyboard and mouse connected, disconnect all externally connected
devices such as Docking Station, USB storage devices, displays, and printers.
Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

Next - Press and Hold the Power button for 15 seconds to Hard Reset.

AND/OR - Power on your PC, press Esc (repeatedly), then F2 at the prompt.
Choose System Tests (Fast Test does a 4 minute hardware check).

AND/OR - Windows Logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B

AND/OR - If you’re using multiple displays, try projecting video to a different monitor.
Press the Windows Logo key + P, select a display, and then press Enter.

Laptop Recovery media ISO or similar image format?

My wife's laptop would not boot and diagnostics could not detect the M.2 SSD. I replaced the M.2 SSD and need to get a recovery media image so I can create a bootable USB stick or CD/DVD. Unfortunately all the support guidelines describe only how to create recovery media from a working HP system.

So where can I download an ISO file or similar so I can create a bootable USB stick or CD/DVD to recover the Windows 10 installation?

There might be an option to obtain the recovery media from HP support but it is not a download.  If you do not wish to go that route, then another option is to make the Windows 10 install media from here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

With a working Windows PC, scroll down to the "Using the tool to create installation media" and then follow the directions.  You can then install Windows 10 from that new media.

If some additional drivers are needed from HP after the install, then they are here:

Thank you for your update.

That's very strange to see - the battery that was removed and it suddenly worked.

With regards to Windows Update and Windows 7 - try first installing manually "Service Pack 2"

Here are instructions >> https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-update/how-to-obtain-and-install-windows-7-sp2/c2c7009f-3a10-4199-9c89-48e1e883051e

The idea is that Windows 7 was released in 2009 and later Service Pack 1 was released in 2011 but nothing major since then. You are restoring to a state much older than today and Windows needs time and resources to get to the latest point. Additionally, it is a "public secret" that Windows 10 is priority on Microsoft servers and not older operating systems. Therefore, I recommend you manually install "SP2" . Tjhe so called Convenience roll up update (consists of 2 KBs) is most popular is Service Pack 2 and contains all updates between 2011 and 2016 merged into 1 big updates and 1 prerequiste.

After that, restart the computer and make sure Windows will update.

You might eventually also run Windows Update troubleshooter utility from Microsoft >> https://aka.ms/diag_wu

Let me know how it goes.

Hi:

If you can still read all 25 characters of the W7 product key on your PC's case, you can make your own W7 installation media.

Click on the Windows ISO Downloader.exe link to download the tool to create the W7 ISO file download.

Select the W7 COEM ISO file download version for the product key the OS is good for, which is the OEM operating system ISO file.

https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-downl...

I have zipped up and attached the Microsoft utility below, that will allow you to either put the file on a USB flash drive or burn it to a DVD.

Then you can install the drivers and available software you need from your PC's support page.

If the Microsoft tool doesn't work to burn a DVD, use this free DVD burning software to burn the ISO file to a DVD.

Select the "Burn ISO file option."   Burn the DVD at the slowest possible speed you can to get a strong burn.

Hi:

To boot from the USB flash drive, you have to turn on the PC, tap the ESC key to get the menu of options, and from that, select the F9 boot options menu.

Select the USB flash drive and press the enter key.

When booting from a DVD you have to go into the BIOS enable legacy mode and disable secure boot.

See this link for the settings to change.

https://www.support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03736054/

Follow the same procedure to boot from a DVD, but select the internal or legacy DVD drive, and press the enter key.
