HP laptop, less than a year old, running Windows 7, 64. These messages appeared on my desktop saying 'Windows is not genuine, Build 7601' and 'Attach an HP Smart Adapter for full performance". I called HP, computer out of warrenty so it is an additional charge, probably a virus. I have the 'Complete Care Protection Plan' from Staples - they don't fix virus problems without an additional charge, but he told me to start in Safe Mode and run my virus program (Norton) and it should show if it's a virus. I did that, it didin't show a virus. I had an online 'Chat' with Norton, he said it's not a virus. Maybe an update didn't load right. He gave me a phone number for Microsoft. I called, out of warrenty, additional charge. I checked my 'Updates' and found three that failed to download, so I successfully downloaded them. Still have the messages. Also the screen brightness changes sometimes when I start up so I have to correct it through the control panel and it sometimes takes forever to send an email, especially with photos. Is there any way to fix this without spending another $200.00?
Thanks for looking.
