I understand that you are having a problem with upgrading to Windows 8.1. I have researchrd this and have found this information on Windows Eight Forums of a similar issue and the customer had to wipe his computer and do a system recovery. I would recommend the same, wiping the computer and Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8), updating all the drivers then upgrading to Windows 8.1.
