Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you are trying to accomplish a dual boot of Windows 8.1 and Linux. I do need to let you know that HP does not support Linux in this fashion. However, I will provide what information I can, by breaking down your post into the relevant points:
"Is the problem due to the fact that this PC has both the integrated INTEL 4600 graphics chip and an AMD Radeon 8670M ?" - Probably not. I've worked with similar dual boot situations and I've never had an issue where a cause like this was the culprit. Then again, I haven't tried the exact configuration as you have described.
"Would a better solution be to use VMware or VirtualBox to setup a Linux guest operating system, the Host System being of course Windows 8.1?" - I agree to all of that. However, I would use VirtualBox in this situation because of the environment.
"Is there a completely safe way to dual boot Windows 8.1 and Linux on a Pavilion 17-e157eo?" - I saved this question for last because there is no 100% safe way to do this. Even doing it properly isn't safe, regardless of the combination. Unfortunately, it is generically not a safe activity. I would make sure you back everything up beforehand.
For more information on this, I would reference the Linux Forums. Thanks for bringing this issue to the HP Forums. Have a great day!
Mario
