It has nothing to do with the Operating System. Windows 7, Windows 8, XP, Vista, even if it were a Mac.....It's hardware, all drives will fail, some of them fail sooner than later. It isn't a matter of if, but when. Some go many years and never have a problem and the drive may out last the computer. However, others may fail very quickly. There really isn't a set limit as to when it is going to happen. You need to treat every drive as if they are going to fail on you soon and create backups. If your computer is only a few days old, then it will be under warranty and you should get in touch with HP Technical Support and they can help get you the new drive that you need to get your computer up and running again.
