The hard drive on my daughters HP Notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit when bad and I had to replace it. I ordered the HP System Recovery Kit for Consumer Notebook (2 disks) which included a 3rd disk for software and drivers.
The recovery went smoothly and the Notebook was up and running like new again. When running windows update the first time, the following errors were noted:
"Windows could not search for new updates"
"An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer"
"Error found: Code 8024A000 windows update encountered an unknown error"
When running windows update thereafter, it keeps saying the service is not running.
"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer:"
A reboot and check of related services shows all are running (Windows Update, COM+ Event System, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), DCOM Server Process Launcher)
STEPS to resolve:
1. Using Windows Update built in Troubleshooter:
I received the message "Troubleshooting cannot proceed. The troubleshooter has experienced an unexpected error and cannot continue."
2. I followed the instructions in "How do I reset Windows Update components?"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
When running Microsoft Fix, I received the same message "Troubleshooting cannot proceed. The troubleshooter has experienced an unexpected error and cannot continue."
3. I manually created a batch file to re-register all DLL’s related to Windows Update using cmd Run as Administrator. First, I used command to stop Windows Update related services, rename the folders (Catroot2 and SoftwareDistribution) related to Windows Update, ran the batch thile, then used command to start the services.
4. I downloaded & ran: windowsupdate.diagcab (msdt.exe)
The Troubleshooter said it made some changes to the computer and showed a green check mark next to Problems installing recent updates. Detailed report said "Repair Windows Update" completed but it still did not work.
5. I then attempted to install SP1 for Windows 7 Home Premium in the hopes that would correct the problem. However, the following error was receoved during the attempt.
"E_UNEXPECTED 0x8000ffff" catastrophic failure when attempting to install SP1
A search on the net indicated this error seems to be a very common error when using system recovery or vendor specific recovery disks after replacing a failed hard drive.
I tried the Hotfix for "E_UNEXPECTED 0x8000ffff" error found in Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2732500)which required me to download and run Windows6.1-KB2732500-v2-x64.msu. That did not resolve the issue.
I ran MSFix it and it said "Troubleshooting cannot proceed. The troubleshooter has experienced an unexpected error and cannot continue."
I then came accross MS Article ID: 2527001 (Troubleshoot issues installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1) and ran the System Update Readiness Tool (Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x64.msu)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2527001
When running the System Update Readiness Tool it stopped with the message:
"Installer encountered an error 0xc8000247"
A search of that error led to many of the same suggested solutions I had already tried. However, it also led me to this discussiion thread at HP:
That topic indicated this whole issue could be related to a driver...and sure enough that resolved the problem for that poster. He was told to download an Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver. I don't know if that same driver is applicable to my daughter's laptop or if there is another driver package I should use instead.
