Whoosh,
Interesting way to use SimplePass - I have not used it in this manner.
- I tried a simple finger swipe on one system and the software behaves as if it is not even set up: Astonishing behavior as I already use HP SimplePass for maybe twenty logins on this system. I did not pursue the invitation to set up HP SimplePass.
- Using the same method on another system, that is, swiping without having opened a Browser, does open the Browser and the subsequent webpage -- and logs in the account. Interestingly, my test page, while it does open, also sets to a different "end page" result. **
My hypothesis, based on that result, is that your issue might lie in the manner in which HP SimplePass is storing and presenting the information. There may be a weakness (difference) in the code that - when the program is used in this manner - misintrerprets, or even misses, the login password data that is stored in the database. At the least, the results seem to indicate that the login data is being used differently. Note that this hypothesis is based on Set Default Programs having been set up to support the outcome as expected.
** I am using a Yahoo mail login as a test page. The manner in which I have this set up presents a unique challenge to the database and it is a good overall "does it work" test.

Set Default Programs
One factor that may influence your results might be the settings used to set Default Programs.
Example:
- If you have Chrome set up as your Default browser (program) to be used to open HTTP(S) websites (URLS),
AND
- you are still using Chrome V29.x,
then
- Swiping your finger print to open SimplePass and select the page afterwards may fail.
Check / Set up Default Programs
Set Default Programs – File Associations
- If / After you make changes to Default Programs, please Restart / Reboot and log in. This is not for Default Programs; the Restart is to make HP SimplePass happy.

Assuming your Default Programs are set as necessary (to IE / Firefox / Chrome PRE V.29 / 28):
- What happens if you first open the selected website and bring up that websites' login page?
- Do you see the HP SimplePass bar along the top of that page inviting you to swipe and log in?
In other words, what is the result when you open the Browser* and the webpage before swiping your fingerprint?
- Does SimplePass respond to the opened login webpage and ask you to swipe your fingerprint to log into the page?
* Dragon Fur reference: Browser should be other than Chrome v29.x
Chrome and HP SimplePass Workaround – Downgrade Chrome
Tested successfully using Chrome V27.0.1453.116 and HP SimplePass V6.0.100.272

Commentary:
Overall, assuming your Set Default Programs is set appropriately to open the URLS in IE or Firefox, this may work.
I have NOT tested any Firefox version even remotely as advanced as V23.x -- I crave stability and ordinarily use a much older Firefox version that I have locked (updates turned off). I believe the most FF version I tested was around V20.x, perhaps three weeks ago?
If no Joy,
You might try the following after setting Default Programs:
Windows 8:
Windows key + X> M (opens the Device Manager) >
Windows 7:
Control Panel> set icon view > Device Manager>
Next:
Open your Biometric Devices >
Right-Click on your Validity Sensor Driver> Uninstall (do NOT delete)
Restart / Reboot the Notebook so the driver can reinstall itself as you log in
Next:
Windows key + X> F (Opens Programs and Features >
Look for SimplePass > RIGHT-Click and select "Repair"
