The Windows update in question was the one that patched Spectre/Meltdown, if you would like to have your machine patched (except the one mentioned above) without disabling windows update, you need to following regkeys to disable the update crippling this model,

I have had to push this out in our organization and we are sitting at about 50+ models of this laptop now. Its upsetting but i would rather that than the users have a paperweight

Two Keys:

Under Regkey Location

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

You will need to create two subkeys here, and they are:

1:

DWORD - Name is "FeatureSettingsOverride" and value is "3"

2:

DWORD - Name is "FeatureSettingsOverrideMask" and value is "3"

after you reboot, this should fix the terrible uselessness of this model on 10.

Hello

This can be a symptom of a hardware problem or a software problem.

If hardware issue, it might be something with the HDD

If software, it may be simply your recovery partition is corrupted.

1. Test your HDD for issues - perform diagnostics using the F2 method >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JXUp43ahHA

2. If the hardware diagnostics passes without problems, reinstall Windows from scratch without using the recovery partition which might be corrupted -

Here are instructions how to clean install/reinstall Windows 10:

Video reference >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAvFm52IjI4

Windows reinstallation / clean installation :

- You can directly download Windows 10 ISO from MS site or download >> Media creation tool from Microsoft site, create installation DVD or installation USB  and  proceed with clean installation/reinstallation.

Download:

Make sure you select the proper version (64 bit / Home or Pro) if asked.

Media Creation tool will always provide you with the latest Windows version/build - now 1709 Fall Creators Update.

- When download completes, you will need to write  the ISO image and boot from a bootable media. You will need a blank USB pendrive (min 4 GB capacity). Use the Media Creation tool.

When ready with the USB drive or with the DVD:

Please, shutdown the computer using the power button.

Insert the Windows USB thumdrive prepared previously

Power on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, start hitting the Esc button repeatedly (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu

Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the USB thumb drive as a boot option.

- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 10. Perform clean installation/custom installation (not repair).

Delete all existing partitions and install Windows on Disc 0 Unallocated space

- After successful Windows installation, install drivers taken from HP web site or via Windows Update/Device Manager >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139

- Make sure Windows is Activated by going to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Activation

- You might want to stop some of the Windows Telemetry by using free tools such as Spybot AntiBeacon or DWS Lite

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes

Hello

Try this:

1) Clear everything in the Windows 10 update cache files >> C:\Windows\Software Distribution\ folder

Here are details how to do it >> https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/mckittrick/windows-update-issues-clear-windows-update-cache/

2) Ensure your PC is connected to the Internet. Run a CMD prompt as administrator and use DISM to repair components of Windows

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Here are details - OPTION ONE - Step 5. >>> https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/7808-use-dism-repair-windows-10-image.html

3) Try Window update troubleshooter - an automated tool which may fix most issues on its own >> https://aka.ms/wudiag

Let me know how it goes

Re: Unable to Update BIOS HP 440 G5 i7

Hello

HP has created an article about your request and issues >> https://support.hp.com/bg-en/document/c00042629

Read the article and try following the steps for updating the BIOS via the USB method (when Windows does not start)

However, I'd like to ask you why  you want to update the BIOS ?

Personally, I do not recommend you do it unless you experience some issues with your existing BIOS and you are sure that the new BIOS will fix it.

General recommendation I provide to users/customers is NOT to upgrade BIOS/UEFI unless they experience any kind of specific BIOS/UEFI issue. Updating just for updaing and just for using the latest verson is not solution. Any kind of update (no matter for what and who relesed it) can fix 2 issues but may introduce 10 more issues. Additionally, upgrading the BIOS (for any vendor) poses more risks because BIOS recovery is not that easy as compared to typical software updates IF something goes wrong.

Same applies for Windows Updates, OS update, drivers updates, etc - upgrade/update IF you have issues which you know are fixed in the newer version or for some severe security issues in the wild. Otherwise, keep the existing version as long as possible. Here is an additional opinion about this >> https://www.howtogeek.com/136881/htg-explains-do-you-need-to-update-your-computers-bios/

I had exacty the same issue, Orange light glowing for several days and wouldnt go off whatever I tried.

I tried pressing the Fn button then the F8 button, as recommend  - no change, I still had the Orange light glowing.

Then - more by accident than design - I pressed both keys Fn & F8 AT EXACTLY THE SAME TIME - and Bingo!

The light went off!

I hope this helps someone with the same frustrating issue and avoids the need for more drastic solutions.

The battery, depending on where in the world you are,....

http://www.argos.co.uk/browse/technology/batteries-and-chargers/batteries-and-rechargeable-batteries/c:30218/price:under-%C2%A35/opt/sort:price/

Duracell Specialty 2032 Lithium Coin Batteries - Pack of    2         £3.99

Panasonic CR2032 Battery (2 pack) - Lithium Coin Cell, 3V
by Panasonic     £1.00

AND the batteries last 5+ years so it seems like a want, rather than a need to change.

The Hard Disk Drive?  I DEFINITELY   go with @CherylG on the make and model.

If in doubt please ask.

Thank you guys for your advices. so I downloaded the Windows 10 from Microsoft website and did the clean install.  They didn't asked for a product key, all i needed was to log into Microsoft account and thats it.  Now the laptop is running much smoother with the SSD on Windows 10.

Re: Can't disable administrator account in Windows 7

When I got the laptop, it still had all the original programs created by the administrator.  I cannot delete that account; it pops up when I boot up the laptop, and pops up demanding a password every time I want to download something.

I wanted to do a factory reset, I was that desparate, but of course the administrator account that was left on the machine popped up.

I created a second account.

I tried to change the password and make changes under User Accounts, but the old administrator account popped up as usual.

Tried to leave the password blank but it didn't work.

Would getting a USB flash drive be my solution?  I can't insert a disc into this laptop.

Re: HP Bios Update

My understanding is that @clarbi had selected "Apply Update Now" and the update process had hung. If so, the only way out is likely to be holding the power button down until power is removed - and praying that there is still a functioning BIOS on the computer. If not, then it is down to any recovery process that is supported by the system in this scenario, exchange (if available) or warranty service.
