Why would you need to install Windows 10 on a brand new laptop?

It s free dos so i had to download windows on a usb and plug it into the computer to make it start. Also please try to answer my question and stop going off topic anyway I thank you for your interest.

It is never off topic to understand the history of the laptop. In other words the actions of the user did to the laptop.

Apparently, you are not saavy enough to know to download and install drivers.

Hi:

See if this works...

Go into the BIOS, enable legacy mode and disable secure boot.

See this link for the settings to change.

https://www.support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03736054/

Have the flash drive in the USB port, restart the PC and tap the ESC key at the beginning of the HP welcome screen to get the menu of options.

Select the F9 boot options menu, and from that, select the legacy USB diskette on key (USB flash drive), and press the Enter key.

The PC should then boot from the flash drive.

Welcome to the HP Forums :) I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I see from your post that you need information and assistance related to latest Windows update. Don't worry I'll be glad to assist you.

After reviewing your post thoroughly, I understand you're having issues updating to latest build which is 1809.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) is a major refresh that brings new features and enhancements to improve the overall experience for desktops, laptops, and tablets.

According to Microsoft that there's indeed a problem that can delete your personal files during the upgrade process. As a result, the company has stopped distributing the October 2018 Update, and it's recommending users not to proceed with the installation using the ISO file until the problem is fixed.

I would suggest you wait until further notice before updating to the latest version.

Hope this answers your question.

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. :)

I was wrong as usual. The Acer Aspire R5 is the laptop i'm using to try to debug the HP laptop, i.e. research fixes on the web, Etc.  A "senior moment" if ever there was one. I'm 74 and trying to help my teacher daughter w. her HP

that she needs badly. She needs the lesson plan files, artwork, craft materials, etc. that  she uses for the pre-elementary class. Of course she has no backup. if I could just login maybe I could get someplace but I can't.  Sorry for my stupid oversight.

Since you have an Acer Aspire laptop you will need Acer support to fix that error:

My hard drive went out. How do I download Win 10 OEM so I can apply my USB recovery data?

My 2013 HP envy laptop's hard drive went out entirely and can't be salvaged. I installed new SSD in it's place but my recovery USB won't recover my data to the new drive. Microsoft site says I need to download the operating system and then use the recovery USB to restore my data. They won't let me download it from their site. They tell me to download OEM software from HP site. I am 2 years out of warrantly. How do I download that? Thanks.

The laptop likely came with something earlier than Windows 10 like Windows 7 or 8. If you ever had Windows 10 installed on it you have the right to reinstall and you need no Key Code or other credentials. Just go to the Microsoft Media Creation Tool site and follow instructions to make a usb drive for reinstallation, boot from it and reinstall on the blank SSD.

How large is the SSD? The original HP restore disk (with Windows 7 or 8) will only work on a drive that is at least as large as the smallest HP offered on that model when new.

Post back with any other questions and please accept as solution if this is the info you needed.

Thank you. It came with Win 8.1 and 1T hard drive. I decided to upgrade to SSD while replacing the failed drive. The SSD is only 500 GB. I already tried the Win 10 Installer and now I see that it didn't work due to the change in drive size.

Thanks

I dont really know where I got it from. My parents got it for me 4 years ago. To sum it up- It will not let me factory reset. When I push f11 when it boots up it just gives me a black screen. One time ive even wait over an hour, but nothing. I cant factory reset it from the desktop either. When I got the laptop, it was windows 10, but now it is windows 7. I dont understand what happened to it, to downgrade. Hopes this clears everything up.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out :)

I see that your experiencing issue with the windows system restore stuck on the startup screen,

As System Restore is stuck for more than 3 hours, then you will have to force shut down, restart your computer and check for status.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

The ESC button makes the system information pop up

if i press the ESC button (needed to exit full screen in site such as Netflix) a dialogue box appears with the system imformation in.

It sounds like your laptop orginally came with Windows 7 on the recovery partition.

Then somewhere along the way, it was upgraded to Windows 10.

Since Windows 7 is losing Microsoft security updates in 12 months time, the best thing to do is to do a clean installation of Windows 10 on the laptop.

Follow the steps given by CherylG to install Windows 10 : https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Clean-Install-of-Windows-10-on-X360-Elitebook-HOW/m-p/6644229/highlight/true#M527172

After Windows 10 is installed, connect the laptop to your router and let Windows updates do its thing.

The following link shows its specs

No information about the keyboard, that implies no backlit keyboard. Please check F5 key, does it have

If the backlight icon is not on the F5 key, look for the backlit keyboard key on the row of function keys

If not at all, machine does not have backlit keyboard.
