Can I install windows 7 on a 15-r005la laptop?

My son recently gave me his HP 15-r005la laptop that he somehow managed to totally wipe the harddrive clean. It came with Windows 8. I want to install Windows 7 on it but it will not recognize the installation disks. Is there something I can do or is it just not possible?

As I understand, your PC boots to a blue screen, 

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824 (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
  • Have you attempted any steps on your own before posting on the HP Forums?
  • When was the last time it worked without these issues?
  • What is the Blue screen error message? 

Let's perform a quick system test:

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

  3. On the main menu, click System Tests.

    The System Tests menu displays.

  4. From the main menu, click System Tests, and then click Quick Test.

  5. Click Run once.

    While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component are shown on the screen. The test can take up to 15 minutes.

I've installed the generic drivers.  A few things:

  • Installing it required you to check the option to delete the files associated with the drivers. Otherwise, it reinstalls itself and you can't install the generic drivers
  • Brightness controls work!
  • Once installed, most of my settings carried over (except for colours settings), but opening the control panel is wonky. The first time I opened it via the Ctrl+Alt+F12 shortcut, it couldn't find the file. After a minute or two, I could, but doing it while the control panel is already open results in the error, 'The operation failed. The file is corrupted.' Slightly worrying, but it seems to work.

I'll attempt to install 1809 in a few days in case I find some issues with the driver.

Cant factory reset!

When I first got my Laptop it was windows 10. After Factory Resetting it the first time it was switched to windows 7.  As of right now as much as Ive tried and looked for way of factory reset it wont work. Ive tried everything, looking through youtube, hp support and other websites, I just cant find a way. My computer looks fine I can access the internet and everything but it is very slow and has to many "apps" on it. So I really want to factory reset it but I cant. Ive also tried going to the task bar and looking for hp recovery manager and I cant find it. It is like it is gone. Please help!

I found this article by Intel on DCH drivers and a supporting FAQ page.  A few quotes:

 

Microsoft is changing the way that hardware drivers work on the Universal Windows Platform (UWP), Windows® 10 (and later)... Intel will begin distributing Windows DCH Drivers for its products beginning in November 2018.

 

This is probably why HP hasen't released an update yet - the transition to DCH probably means there's a lot more testing involved, especially since:

 

After a driver has been updated to a Windows DCH Driver, it's possible to roll back to a legacy driver; however, rolling back isn't recommended as it involves a complex process that could result in system instability.

 

Basically, it's a one way process. In the brief time that I've used it, i haven't experienced any stability problems or anything, but the fact the rolling back isn't recommended means that most people probably shouldn't install it and instead wait for HP to release an update.

Hi, Thanks for helping me.

So I did a diagnostic (fast test) and everything passed.

The only 2 things that I am not sure that passed is this:

Battery Check: Primary - OK (0)
Primary: Logic State - OK (0), Charge State - OK (0)

 

I tried to make  USB recovery drive but I don't have a 16gb USB but I don't really care about all my files. I'll reinstall them anyway.

I can't get past the login screen because everytime I hit a key on my laptop the screen turns black and the power led blinks.

I am confused.

Who did you get the laptop from?

What you describe makes no sense.

Generally PCs had Windows 7 installed because they had downgrade rights from Windows 10. But those are for business-grade laptops, not consumder-grade laptops.
