Tried to do recovery when got error hard drive 301.  Got as far a resetting and it only went to 1% and quite.  Looks like I need to replace the hard drive but can't find a manual on how to.  The one I found doesn't look anything like the back of the computer as far as what screws to remove to get to the hard drive.

If your notebook came with W10 installed by HP, then the license (product key) is in the BIOS.

You do not need the product key to install windows using the method I described.

After W10 is installed and you are connected to the internet, W10 will automatically activate itself.

You won't have to do anything.

All you need to know when you go to install W10 will be what version it is (Home, Pro, Single Language...).

Hi:

What is the product number of your dv7?

The product number can be found on the same label as the serial number.

Please do not post the serial number.

Brand new laptop wont turn on

I just received my brand new laptop in the mail and it will not turn on.  It has been completely charged and when I push the power button, only the caps lock key blinks.  There is no sound and the screen is black.  Is there something I can do, or do I need a new laptop?

The following link shows specs of your computer:

   https://support.hp.com/ie-en/document/c06064585

The series has 2 options for camera (webcam):

  • HP Wide Vision HD: HD camera - indicator LED, USB 2.0, BSI sensor, f2.0, 88° WFOV–720p by 30 frames per second
  • HP Wide Vision IR camera - indicator LED and 2x IR LEDs, USB 2.0, FHD Hybrid BSI sensor, 88° WFOV–1080p by 30 frames per second–Supports Windows Hello

and your machine has HP Wide Vision HD Camera with integrated dual array digital microphone, looks like it has the first option therefore your machine does not have camera which supports Windows Hello.

Regards.

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you want to you want to you want to change the operating system on your notebook.

You can upgrade the OS on your notebook.

Instead of Windows 8, you can upgrade to Windows 10.

If you upgrade to Windows 8, you might face issues with drivers.

In Windows 10, Microsoft will take care of the drivers.

Let me know if that helps.

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

Thanks for the proposed solution only I wouldn't be able to use. In fact while waiting for a proposal from the forum I tried changing the system using USB flash disk.

And now the new problem I got is  a message saying "Windows can't be installed on this disc. The selected disc has a partition table MBR. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed on GPT discs."

Please I'm waiting. I already formated the partition of the hard drive containing the OS

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate your time and effort.

I understand the issue better now.

The hard disk is installed in the wrong format.

Format again using NTTF format to fix this issue.

Refer this HP document for more assistance:- Click here

Thank you.  I have downloaded the manual.  One more questions, since this computer came with Windows 10 and all the drivers pre installed how do I go about getting them.  I know there was no back up set of disks made for this computer.

You're very welcome.

You can reinstall W10 for free as follows...

To reinstall W10...Use the Media Creation Tool.  Make the 64 bit installation media.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You can make a W10 USB flash drive installer using an 8 GB flash drive using another Windows PC, if your PC is not working.

If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W10 will install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.

Here are the steps to create the W10 USB flash drive installer...

  1. Select Download tool now, and select Run.
  2. If you agree to the license terms, select Accept.
  3. On the What do you want to do? page, select Create installation media for another PC, and then select Next.
  4. Select the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for Windows 10. You want 64 bit.

  5. Select which media you want to use:
  6. USB flash drive.  Plug in a blank USB flash drive with at least 8GB of space. Any content on the flash drive will be deleted.

You can also save the W10 ISO file instead of making the bootable USB flash drive installer, and burn it to a DVD using the tool I zipped up and attached below if you would rather use a DVD to reinstall W10.

Then you can reinstall the drivers and available software from the PC's support page.

If you would prefer to pay HP, and order recovery media which includes all of the programs and drivers that came with your notebook, you can do so at the link below...
