Thank you for joining HP Forums.

It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.

I would suggest here is to Run Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Download and install the troubleshooter from this link.

Now try to perform Windows Updates:

1) In the search box, type, and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

If the issue still persists, I would suggest here is to update the Bios on your computer from  HP Support Assistant Updates:

1) In the search box, type, and open HP Support Assistant.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Cannot find operating system

I followed steps to reset my notebook to factory settings. After it has completed there is a black screen with the message cannot find operating system. I have tried resetting and booting back put but the same message returns.

If someone can help or walk me through steps how to get my notebook up and running this would be appreciated.

Hi

Thank you for posting back.

There are 2 options now:

- it is just stuck (temporary glitch)

or

- Windows reset did not go well, did not complete and now you are left without any working operating system

Let's understand and try to fix it:

1. Try hard restart/hard reset (to rule out the temporary glitch)

Press the power on-button on your PC and hold it for about 5-10 seconds until your computer powers off completely.

Remove and unplug any external periferals and accessories.

Press once the power-on button to turn on the PC and wait if it will start now. Wait...

If it still fails to load properly, this will confirm the reset did not complete correctly - you have no operating system. Go ahead with the next steps

2. Try performing the Reset again

or

3. Reinstall Windows 10 - clean vanilla Windows 10 installation

2) You can read here how to restart the recovery process (F11 option) and try it again >>http://hp.dezide.com/ts/start.jsp?guide=HPSystemRecovery.net&section=ccweb&sfs=tdoc&lc=en&language=english&cc=us&action=step&response=1&step=C23452.C26726&session=ff63d2d6-eaae-4242-a3f3-d2bb0e

3) Sometimes the recovery partition may have gone corrupted. Therefore, the recovery process (F11) may not complete successfully. In this case you will have to go the longer way of performing clean "vanilla" Windows 10 installation. The process may take slightly longer but may be better for the long run. Here are steps on how to perform this step >> https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/EliteBook-very-slow-after-driver-installation/m-p/6725684#M534166

Let me know how it goes.

order in BIOS is not obeyed and wrong OS launches

Hello,

I had only a HDD in my laptop and then a got a SSD disc, so I installed Windows 10 on it by using a DVD where was a instalation media made from Media Creation Tool. Before I installed it on SSD, i disconnected HDD. The instalation was successful, I connected HDD and started the laptop. Then I changed the booting order in BIOS, the SSD is before HDD to boot the OS from SSD (I still have OS on HDD, but I wanted to that the OS on SSD will be always launched first.), so I expected that there will be no problem with it because I did exactly what I had read before it on Microsoft web discussion.

Then I saved the changes I made in BIOS and launched the laptop but the OS from HDD is still launched, not the one from SSD although that the order is different...

I can launch the OS on SSD only in manually way in BIOS but I want it to be launched automaticly and I have not found any way how to do it yet.

Could you give me some advice to help with this issue ? Thank for any idea.

And another strange issue about BIOS. When I want to make changes in BIOS, I can sign in as administrator or as a guest. As admin I must enter my password, of course, but then I can make much more less changes than as a guest logging by no password - guest can make almost any change that is possible in BIOS but administrator logged by password cannot - isn't it strange ?

If you know the possible reason why is it like that please share your knowledge with me.  You will have my thanks.

I restarted my laptop and when it came back on chrome wouldn't open up.

Boot Device Not Found When Switching Off Legacy Mode

I want to run BitLocker on my laptop. It fails and I believe the reason is that I currently have secure boot disabled. To enable secure boot, I have to disable legacy mode. When I disable legacy mode the boot device is not found. I guess the mbr isn't installed in UEFI mode, but how can I fix that?

I got a chromebook for Christmas but can only get it to go to a recycle bin type of symbol.  I can't get it to set up,  can't get it to go to where I put in my wireless information or anything .

Does it need taking back to the store or is it fixable?

Thanks .

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Did you purchase the recovery cd or did you create it on his own pc?

if you purchased and it's not working, suggest a Hardware test.

Open the System Tests menu when Windows won't start.

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

  3. On the main menu, click System Tests.

    The System Tests menu displays.

  1. Then click Extensive Test.

     Selecting the Extensive Test

  2. Click Run once, or Loop until error.

While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component displays on the screen. The test can take 2 or more hours to complete.

    Running the Extensive Test

  3. If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in Test Logs on the main menu.

if he created and it isn't working, I suggest you t purchase the recovery

Keep me posted with the test results.

Have a great day!

Cheers:)

Re: HP Chromebook OS Recovery Fails

Unfortunately this HP Chromebook only displays a blank screen and will not load into Chrome OS so it is not possible to follow the steps you have suggested. Can only be started with ESC + REFRESH + POWER at which stage it comes up with the Restore with USB page.
I have researched online and it appears that there is no other external method of recovering this unit. I was wondering if anyone online had successfully been able to diagnose and repair this specific fault... it looks to be a hardware flash memory problem.

My only other option is to find another unit with a defective screen and do a brain transplant.

, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned you are unable to boot into the chromebook desktop to try the suggested step.

Try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.

On the working computer (not the Chromebook with the error):

  1. If you're using a Mac or PC:
    1. If you haven't yet, install Chrome.
    2. Open Chrome Chrome.
    3. Install the recovery app.
  2. Open the recovery app.
  3. Click Get started.
  4. Click Select a model from a list, or type in the model number of the Chromebook you want to recover. To find this number, look at the bottom of the error message on your Chromebook screen.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Insert your USB flash drive or SD card into the computer.
  7. In the dropdown menu, choose the USB flash drive or SD card you inserted.
  8. Click Continue.
  9. Click Create now.
  10. When you see a message saying that your recovery media is ready, remove the USB flash drive or SD card from the computer.

Refer this article from google to know more information about performing a reset. Click Here

If you still have issues after trying out the steps. Please follow the steps suggested previously for the service options for your laptop.

Hi,

Does the computer stay on? Have you tried pressing Alt+CTRL+DEL and see if you can sign out and then sign back in again?

You could also try waiting a few minutes, maybe a driver or update is finishing the install.

You can also turn off the PC a couple of times by holding power button which will send Windows ten into automatic repair and give more options.

Hope it helps,

David
