Hi, i recently bought this laptop and i like almost everything about it. The fairly quick CPU and dedicated GPU make it suitable for light gaming, which is what i want to do with this laptop. The games i play (for example Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone) run really great (~60/70 fps) and look nice on medium settings.
However, after i play a game for a couple of minutes, the laptop suddenly throttles the CPU and GPU down to a crawl. I've checked this in Open Hardware Monitor. For example, the GPU is clocked down to 135mhz. It makes the game go down to 10 fps, hardly playable! After 30-60 seconds, the components go back up to their normal speed and the game runs perfect again. The laptop doesn't even get close to warm, so i really don't see a reason for the laptop to cripple itself so much!
An HP support employee updated the BIOS; this seemed to have made the throttling a bit less but it's still there way too often (every 1-2 minutes).
It's a true shame that this awesome laptop gets crippled so much; it has way more potential! It would be great if a BIOS-update could be released that either reduces throttling greatly or gets something like a Performance Mode where throttling is disabled alltogether. Of course, within the temperature limits of the components, but the laptop could easily get a bit warmer in this mode.
Thanks for listening!
